A breakthrough in computer technology was possible after the invention of display mechanism. The earliest display mechanism in computers was early Teletype Monitor. Computers and televisions that we know today became a reality after the invention of Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). CRT was the only display mechanism for computers and TVs until recently.

Computer Display can be broken down to

  • The Early Teletype Monitor
  • Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Displays
  • Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD)
  • Plasma Displays
  • Light-Emitting Diode (LED)
  • 3D Monitor
  • Touch Screen

In this series of computer display, we have already discussed on

Early Teletype Monitor and Cathode Ray Tube

LCD and Plasma Display

On this article we will focus on Light-Emitting Diode (LED), 3D Monitor and Touch Screen.

Light-Emitting Diode (LED)

Technological advancement in Computer Displays has led to invention of LED monitors. Today, LED displays, used both in computer monitor and Television screen, are in vogue. LED provides higher contrast and better viewing angles compared to LCD.

3D Monitor

In the last couple of years advancement in Computer Displays has taken a giant leap. Now monitors are able to deliver three dimension visuals. The Polarized 3D Monitor displays flicker free 3D images when viewed through polarized glasses. Autostereoscopic screen generates 3D images without headgear.

Touch Screen

Touch Screen Displays are the latest invention, which uses touching of the screen as an input commands. Touch Screen technology is widely used in hand-held devices such as cell phone and tablet. Though not so popular because of their high price, Touch Screen technology is also used in desktop monitors and laptops.

In the beginning computer monitors were used for data processing and television receivers for entertainment. Today the lines between computer monitor and TV have blurred because TV sets have become fully digital. We can now use high-definition TV as a computer.

How Computer Display Helped in the Evolution of Computer Graphics

In the last 80 years or so, computer graphics and computer display have made phenomenal advancements. Evolution of Computer Graphics is closely related to the advancement of Computer Display.

The history of computer graphics can be traced to the invention of the thermionic valve or electron tube. The thermionic valve or electron tube made possible to generate black and white images. Later, the technology improved, and color images in computer and television screens became possible.

By the 1980s, personal computers such as Commodore Amiga and Macintosh were developing as a design tool. In the late 1980s, the first fully computer-generated short films were developed at Pixar by using SGI computers.

Today, Computer Graphics are extensively used in the field of education, and science and technology. Computer-aided design, computer simulation, digital art, graphic design, animation, video games, virtual reality and web design are some of the field that make wide use of Computer Graphics. These days, many advanced computer software are available in the market that help people to create animations or cartoon movies.
